Jana Vokey saw so many people lend a helping hand when she played volleyball in school she felt it was only right to follow suit.
The Pasadena woman is the winner of the Newfoundland and Labrador Volleyball Association’s Paul Augot Award for Dedication to Refereeing.
Vokey played the game in high school before taking up coaching duties after she graduated and she always noticed how there was a demand for referees no matter what level of volleyball.
Seeing there was a need for more officials, she started filling in when nobody was available to do games.
There were times when she had to officiate games in the same tournament that she was coaching in and those were pretty hectic weekends, but it didn’t matter to her because she just wanted to make sure the players got to play the game.
She knows that tournaments don’t happen without officials on hand to ensure fairness and safety for all participants so she knows the value in what she loves to do in her free time.
“It’s all for the kids, right? “At the end of the day you do everything for the kids,” Vokey said earlier this week.
Vokey isn’t a person who seeks the limelight. She’s not the one looking for the camera.
She does what she does because she enjoys it.
She was shocked and overwhelmed all rolled into one when she got the news.
But, it was nice to be recognized for her contribution to the game and she appreciates the award.
“I’m very proud. Absolutely,” she said.
