There won’t be a new venue for rowers to start the season, but the local rowing club hasn’t ruled out introducing a new one before the season culminates.

The Humber Valley Rowing Club, under president Jeff Griffin, had been looking at the former Curling watershed area as a new venue for the club since the end of last season.

The club believes its existing location at Brake’s Cove no longer meets its needs so they considered looking around for a venue that would be bigger and more attractive to growing the sport on the west coast.

With the rowing season only weeks away, Griffin said he hasn’t heard any feedback with regards to the Curling watershed area being a good fit for the club so rowers will hit the water at Brake’s Cove when the boats are taken out in a week or so, as long as Mother Nature co-operates.

“My focus is shifting to possibly using a new venue for the summer’s regatta to showcase a new location and hopefully get some eyes open to that idea and then maybe we can take a step forward from there,” Griffin said.

In the meantime, the club is preparing for another season with boats being fixed and new equipment being purchased and the search for a hired coxswain is underway to ensure rowers have everything they need to get a good start to the season.

“The ball is rolling on everything so we hope to have the boats in the water in a week or so,” he said.
