STEPHENVILLE, N.L. — The host rink got off to a rough start in the men’s division of the 2019 Travelers curling championships Wednesday at the Caribou Curling Club in Stephenville.

The White rink — consisting of Todd White, Alex Parr, Richard Brake and Sheldon Buckle — found themselves on the wrong end of an 11-3 score against Team Feltham of Gander, before dropping a 7-1 decision to St. John’s-based Team Brenton.

Team Mullins of Corner Brook — Michael Mullins, Terry Oke, Brian King and Doug Piercey — were 1-1 after Day 1, beating Team Young of Corner Brook 10-3 and losing 7-5 to Team Thomas of the Gateway Curing Club in Port aux Basques. The Thomas rink features Dave Thomas, Travis Cormier, David Power and Floyd Francis.

Team Young — Kenny Young, Gerry Young, Nicholas O’Neill and Jody Janes — lost both games on the day, with the second an 8-1 defeat at the hands of Feltham.

Action resumes 3 p.m. today, while women’s division play begins 9:30 a.m.
