People love having something to do during the winter months with Mother Nature usually bringing lots of snow and cold temperatures.
For a lot of people on the west coast, having a senior hockey team to cheer for has been a great way to break up the winter.
Senior hockey is alive on the west coast with three teams competing for top spot this year and all three teams have some quality players who can bring fans out of their seats.
Corner Brook has its own followers who support the team and it was evident at the Corner Brook Royals home opener for the 2018-19 season with over 1,200 fans on hand to watch the home team register a 10-6 win over the Port aux Basques Mariners.
The Star caught up with a couple of the fans at Saturday’s game to get their thoughts on another season of Royals hockey.
Question: How do you feel about senior hockey in your community and what did you think of this year’s edition of the Royals?
Lewis Decker, Pasadena
I wish Deer Lake was still in it to make it more exciting , but I have to say it’s pretty good hockey. I like a good hockey game. The game is pretty good and there are some good players, but there were too many penalties to suit me.
Nathan Manning, Corner Brook
It’s not bad hockey. The Royals are playing good hockey, but I think they’re taking too many penalties. It was a good performance from the team tonight. Couldn’t ask for any better. It was gone for some years so I’m glad they got it going again. I love going to the games on the weekend and I look forward to more.
Robert Park, Lark Harbour
I think it’s fantastic that hockey is back. I think the Royals are great and they’re playing good hockey. It’s good entertainment. I drive in from Lark Harbour to watch and it’s all worth the ride for me. I enjoy coming in here to watch the Royals.
