SYDNEY, N.S. — Cape Breton Eagles forward Egor Sokolov has been named to Russia’s national junior team selection camp, the team announced on Tuesday.
Sokolov has been dominate so far this season with the Eagles, leading in the team with 21 goals and 26 assists for 47 points in 28 games.
The 19-year-old has represented Russia in the past at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in 2016-17 as well as at the under-18 level. This is his first invite to the national junior program.
“I am so excited to have a chance to represent Team Russia at the World Juniors. It is an amazing opportunity,” said Sokolov in a press release.
“Ever since I was a little kid, I dreamed of this moment. It would be the most important tournament of my life so far and I couldn’t be prouder to wear the Team Russia jersey.”
Sokolov will be one of 15 forwards hoping to represent the country at the 2020 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship in Ostrava and Trinec, Czech Republic.
Russia will open the tournament on Dec. 26 at 10 a.m. against the host Czech Republic.
