It seems as though it was such a short time ago back in May, when the Labrador West Minor Soccer Association was just gearing up for another season on the soccer pitch. As quick as that, another season has come and gone.
The good news is that everyone associated can celebrate another season of great successes. The Labrador West Minor Soccer Association represents players from Labrador City, Wabush and Fermont, an all-inclusive group that encourages participation of all players, of all ages, from all communities within the region.
This year’s season saw a total of seven divisions of players ranging in age from age three to 17. This summer’s registration saw 397 players from the three participating communities.
Managing this organization and handling all of the logistical efforts necessary to see the season run smoothly is no small task. They are run by a full board of members and countless volunteers.
The season begins in May with games being played in the arena in Labrador City with a move to the field on the first part of July. The organization has five student coaches 16 to 18 years of age hired to deliver lessons of the game itself as well as the structure required for the players to learn the many lessons of team play.
It is a very busy schedule with soccer being played six out of seven days, each week. The regular season games are also supplemented with scheduled tournaments as well.
In July, the Bob Hamlyn Memorial Tournament was held over two days and included teams from the Labrador West group as well as teams from Happy Valley-Goose Bay and Churchill Falls.
There was also the Junior Labrador Cup Tournament held over a full weekend in Happy Valley-Goose Bay with teams represented from all communities as well.
On Labour Day weekend the Aubrey Pike Memorial Tournament was held, closing this year’s season.
The closing also saw the presentation of the Aubrey Pike Memorial Award for Most Dedicated Player to Finley Smith.
