The fifth-place Northridge Curling Rangers put themselves in a strong position to advance past the sixth-ranked Veitch Wellness Centre Masters and continue their attempt to climb into the final tier of the Corner Brook Molson Senior Men's Soccer League playoffs, as they took Game 1 of the two-game, total-goal series by a 3-0 score.
All the goals came late, as Greg Myrden opened the scoring in the 78th, before Quentin Gillingham buried two back-to-back in the 81st and 82nd minutes for the Rangers.
The second game of that series will go 9 p.m. Sunday night.
In action from the top-three bracket on Wednesday, the league’s two unbeaten teams stayed that way as the top-seeded West Side Monarchs and second-place Ford Mustangs played to a 0-0 draw.
The Mustangs will tangle with third-place Clancy’s Pub 6:30 p.m. Sunday, before the Monarchs square off against that same Stephenville-based pub club 7 p.m. Monday night.
