GRAND FALLS-WINDSOR, N.L. — After a finish that went down to the wire, the Southern Shore Breakers have forced a fifth game in province’s senior hockey championship.
The Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts were attempting a four-game sweep Saturday night, April 13, at the Joe Byrne Memorial Arena, looking to clench its fourth Herder Memorial Trophy championship in six years. However, the Breakers pushed through with a 4-2 victory.
The Cataracts made their intentions about wanting the win clear early in the first period, as captain Michael Brent banked the team’s first goal 44 seconds in.
But the Breakers were quick to react, knocking in three goals – courtesy of Blake Dalton, Jeremy Nicholas and Peter Kavanaugh – before the period’s end.
Working damage control in the second, Michael Cole would secure the only goal of the period for the Cataracts.
A back and fourth game ensued in the third period, with the Breakers adding an insurance goal with four minutes left on the clock.
Goaltender Mark Yetman faced 43 shots for the Breakers while 38 pucks were fired on A.J. Whiffen of the Cataracts.
Herder action continues at the Joe Byrne Memorial Arena in Grand Falls-Windsor on Sunday, April 14, at 1:30 p.m.
