The St. Anthony Polar Centre hosted its first big tournament of the hockey season this past weekend.
The 30th annual Remembrance Day Hockey Tournament was held Nov. 9-11.
Teams from St. Anthony, Goose Cove, the Straits area and Torbay participated in the invitational tournament this year across three divisions – a 19-plus male division, a 40-plus male division and a female division.
There was some thrilling hockey, including the Non-Competitive (40-plus) Division final.
The game between the Torbay Turrs and the Grenfell Heritage team came down to the final minute with the score tied 2-2.
As the clock winded down, Greg Ivany put the game winner home for the Grenfell Heritage team with just 15 seconds left.
In the Competitive (19-plus) Division final, the Nine Inch Males defeated GPPA 3-2. Riley Ricks scored the game winner.
Meanwhile, in the Female Division, goalkeeping was the story. In the finals, Straits goaltender Aleisha White closed the door against the St. Anthony Blue offense, leading her team to a 2-0 victory.
Emergency response
The action on the ice during the 30th annual Remembrance Day Hockey Tournament came to an abrupt halt on the afternoon on Nov. 10.
GPPA player Mateo Short suffered a frightening wrist injury.
During play, Short’s wrist was cut open accidentally by an opposing player’s skate. Fortunately, trained first responders were nearby to help out.
Two players on the opposing team, Jessie Pynn and Steven Ward are paramedics, and nurses Mary Jane Warren and Krista Howell were in the stands. These four people reacted quickly to the emergency.
Short escaped the incident without serious injury. He required seven stitches but there was no artery damage. He did not play in the remaining tournament games.
