Turpin, Ward will meet for Newfoundland and Labrador women's curling championship

It will be rinks skipped by Kelli Turpin and Cathlia Ward squaring off Sunday afternoon in the final of the Scotties Newfoundland and Labrador women’s curling championship at Bally Haly Country Club in St. John’s.
The teams earned their berths in the championship game by finishing with the best records — 4-1 — in the preliminary round of the six-rink event.
All half-dozen entries were from the Re/Max Centre (St. John’s Curling Club).
In their round-robin meeting Saturday morning, Turpin downed Ward 8-2.
Today’s 2:30 p.m. matchup guarantees there will be a first-time winner of the provincial crown … sort of.
Turpin and teammates Stephanie Guzzwell, Beth Hamilton and Carrie Vautour have each been Newfoundland women’s champions before, but all seperately, never as part of the same team. And Jessica Cunningham, the third for Ward’s rink, which also includes Cindy Miller and Noelle Thomas-Kennell, was part of two provincial Scotties winners skipped by Heather Strong.
However, for the last eight years, it has been teams skipped by either Strong or Stacie Curtis which have represented this province at the Tournament of Hearts Canadian championship. But with Strong taking the year off and Curtis having moved to the United States, the rink wearing Newfoundland and Labrador's colours at the nationals next month in Sydney, N.S., will be led by someone different.
The Erica Trickett  team, which included the other three members of the Curtis rink that took the provincial Scotties last year, finished at 3-2.

Sarah Hill was 2-3, while Wendy Dunne and reigning provincial junior women’s champion Mackenzie Glynn were both 1-4.
