The senior division athletes had a chance to shine at the Corner Brook Curling Club over the past weekend, but now it’s all about the youth movement at the local facility.
The 2019 U18 Junior Men’s and Women’s Curling Championships got underway on Wednesday, though only the men’s bracket saw action on the opening day.
The host rink, consisting of Daniel O’Neill, Nicholas Baldwin, Ethan Mercer, Eric Hoyles and Ethan Mulley, downed Team Pryor of Gander 11-5 to kick off their quest for the crown.
They are back on the ice 5:30 p.m. today against Team Young of St. John’s.
Caribou Curling Club’s Team Sacrey, featuring Jonathan Sacrey, Micah Sacrey, Sean Vermaak, Aiden Ouaida-Foley, and James Lewis, came out on the losing end of a 9-4 score to Team Young.
Another Caribou Curling Club rink, Team Butler, won’t see action until 8:30 a.m. today when they face their Stephenville clubmates in the Sacrey rink. The Butler squad features John William Butler, Jacob Hatcher, Cole Hulan, and Andrew Roberts.
The women’s division will begin play 2:30 p.m. today, with three rinks in particular to keep an eye on — Team Mitchell of Corner Brook (Mackenzie Mitchell, Sarah McNeil Lamswood, Mikayla O’Reilly, and Ainsleigh Piercey), Team Goulding of Stephenville (Rebecca Goulding, Sarah Cassell, Emma Butler, Martha Snelgrove), and Team Savoury of Stephenville (Jacqueline Savoury, Samantha Cassell, Olivia Ayre, Beth Stokes, and Kate Stokes).
There will be another Stephenville versus Stephenville matchup today when Team Savoury faces Team Goulding at 2:30 p.m.
The Mitchell rink starts their tournament with another 2:30 p.m. contest against Team Neary of St. John’s.
