CINDY'S SNAPSHOT: Ominous signs ahead of Dorian

On Saturday, you could feel the storm approaching and if you looked up, you could see signs of it too. Fonda Wyre noticed this ominous looking sky over the Canso Causeway in Nova Scotia on Saturday. The clouds are called Asperitas cloud; they often look like the surface of the sea on a choppy day. In fact, the name comes from the Latin verb ‘aspero’, meaning to make rough. There has to be a lot of heat and energy to produce this spectacular formation of clouds.

Can you say gorgeous? Ronald O’Toole sent this ‘Sunrise at the Castle’ photo he took on Sept. 17 at Logy Bay, N.L. The sun’s rays look like the petals of a flower as it rises out of the Atlantic Ocean. Logy Bay is located near Torbay and is about 10 minutes from downtown St. John’s.

Judy Doyle sent this photo of deer visiting her property on Cape Breton’s Mira River on Monday morning. She said deer are frequent visitors to the area and yesterday she counted as many as seven walking along the river near her home. The deer silhouetted against the morning sun are a beautiful sight.

When hurricane Larry made landfall on the west side of the Avalon on Sept. 11, many things were blown around. Once the storm cleared, Don Simms found this lovely butterfly resting on a sedum in his yard in Mount Pearl, N.L. I wasn't sure what kind of butterfly it was, so I looked it up. Here's what I found. This beauty is a Vanessa Atalanta or red admiral: a medium-sized butterfly with black wings, reddish bands, and white spots.
