Average student now has sights set on education career

Julie Penney of Pasadena poses for a photo after receiving Governor General certificate she was presented at the College of the North Atlantic business and applied arts graduation and awards ceremony on Friday morning.

Moving from an average student in high school to accepting a Governor General award for academic excellence on Friday came with a sense of accomplishment for Julie Penney of Pasadena.

Receiving the award at her graduation ceremonies was also a real surprise for the community studies graduate of College of the North Atlantic’s Bay St. George Campus.

“I didn’t expect it at all,” she said following the awards ceremony, where she was also presented a President’s Medal award.

“I was an average student in high school, trying my best but struggling with some subjects. I found this (community studies) was something I wanted to do, so I dedicated myself to doing the best I could do with it.”

Her awards are a good indication that she’s done well with the course and impressed faculty at the institution.

After leaving high school, Penney did a year and a half at Grenfell College in Corner Brook doing general studies and psychology, but decided this was a career that she didn’t want to pursue.

She took a half a year off from studies before going into the community studies program and feels that is where she found her niche.

“I loved the course and the instructors provided excellent support, really helping you want to do your best,” Penney said. “I’d definitely recommend this course to people who are not sure what they want to do.”

She said during the program she did a lot of volunteering in the community and got involved with a lot of different organizations, which is not only good for a resume, but helps you build leadership and different life skills.

Penney will be working during the summer and in the fall will be continuing to work on an online degree through Cape Breton University.

She did her work placement at Pasadena Elementary School and from that developed an interest into going into the field of education, which is the career path she now has her sights set on.
