Corner Brook - It's never too early to join the fight against breast cancer.

The annual Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation's CIBC Run for the Cure - making its second appearance in the city, but 17th nationwide - is slated to go ahead on Oct. 5, but as many as 100 people have already registered, both online and offline.

"We're expecting twice as many participants this year," said local director Gerine Collingwood, a breast cancer survivor. "We had close to 400 people registered last year, even though we went into it hoping to reach the 200-mark."

Last year's local event raised $51,000 overall, with all funds raised in Atlantic Canada staying in Atlantic Canada. The event featured a run or walk of either one kilometre or five kilometres around West Street. This year the route has changed, though the distance remains the same.

"It will start at the Pepsi Centre this year and we'll go the loop that goes around the curling club and comes up by the school," Collingwood said. "When we clocked it, that happened to be exactly one-kilometre and so we can have five laps of that for people as well."

Afterwards, the Annex will be used for any awards they might give out, as well as thank-yous and live entertainment.

Interested parties can either register at www.cibcrunforthecure.com via the Corner Brook link or there are telephone numbers listed as well. People can sign-up as individuals or as a team, which has to consist of at least 10 people.

"Anybody that wants to participate can," Collingwood said. "Even if they don't want to collect pledges, although in that case, they won't receive a shirt. If they want to bring their babies in carriages or their dogs on a leash they can, all we ask is these people bring up the rear of the line.

"I hope people get out there and register and, if they don't have the Internet, they can certainly phone me at 634-6994 and I can give them pledge sheets."

The run is scheduled to go ahead Oct. 5 from 2-4 p.m.
