What began as a small agricultural fair held at a storage facility/slaughterhouse in Piccadilly 40 years ago, has grown into what residents know today as the Port au Port Agricultural Craft Fall Fair.

Danny McCann, one of the events organizers, says the fair has undergone a lot of changes in the years since it was held in Piccadilly.

Like a lot of things, it probably had some years that the numbers were down, but weve experienced growth since 1998 [when the fair made its new home at Our Lady of Mercy gym]

Mr. McCann says the fair has seen significant growth in the number of participants who sign up to get involved, and the number of people who come to check it out.

Its more crafty now than it was then, he says, and also notes the fair draws crowds and sellers from all over the Western region.

Theres always a segment of the population that travels to come to it, says Mr. McCann, and we still experience that draw from Corner Brook and Pasadena.

Marg Gaudon, chair of the Port au Port Economic Development Association, says the community of Port au Port looks forward to the fair each year.

Its always brought people together, she says. Its a great gathering place.

Mr. McCann says as of last week, there were over 50 tables signed on for the fair.

From fresh local vegetables and homemade fudge, to preserves and knit goods, weve got it all, he says, noting that local organizations like the Lourdes Cadet group also benefit from the fair, as they sell vegetables there each year to fundraise.

Ms. Gaudon says the organizing committee is hoping for good weather for the event, and that people will come out and check it out.

Every year the fair is growing, and were hoping that this year will be bigger and better than ever, she says.

Were hoping that people will come and celebrate with us.

The 40th annual Port au Port Agricultural Craft Fall Fair takes place on Sept. 29 and 30 at Our Lady of Mercy gym in Port au Port West. For more information, or to sign up for a booth, contact Danny McCann at 648-2745.
