CORNER BROOK — Vaughn Granter has been knocking on a lot of doors since he won the nomination to represent the Progressive Conservatives in the Feb.15 byelection in Humber West.

And what he’s been hearing is that people want a voice in the House of Assembly.

“They want someone from the district on the government side of the house,” said Granter, while taking a quick break from campaigning in the Shamrock Cresent area of the district Saturday afternoon.

He said people know how much the PC government has done for the province, the city and even Humber West when it comes to infrastructure dollars and they are happy with it.

He said he’s not hearing too many issues, just that people want strong representation in the district.

“They want a strong representative, a strong voice, and they know that I can bring that voice.”

Granter said he has always been a people person and is promising voters in Humber West that will continue.

He said the focus for his campaign will be to knock on as many doors and talk to as many people as he can.

Premier Kathy Dunderdale lent her support to the effort on Friday.

Granter said they visited Corner Brook Pulp and Paper and some local coffee shops to meet with potential voters.

Meanwhile, New Democratic Party candidate Rosie Myers spent the weekend meeting and talking with party officials to plan her campaign strategy and was unavailable for comment.

Mr. Granter is one of the most hardworking people I know. I am usually a Liberal voter but because I know of the type of man Vaughn is and how dedicated he is to his service, this is a no brainer for me.

    Why Vote Granter

It's interesting to read "they want a voice on the government side" and hearing about "infrastructure dollars". Mr. Granter wants us to believe these things came about because of the Tory government? How SAD of a people does he think we are? This current government has done nothing but destroy rural Newfoundland, has not supported any economic development in the area, has let 2 paper mills close, and taken a "it's my way or the highway" attitude when dealing with everyone across this country? Vaughn Granter IF elected will be a backbencher. He will sit in the back row, twiddling his thumbs until someone rattles his chain and asks him to tow the party line *here*here* ... He can sit right there with Terry Loder and the others that rode Danny's coattails to a job in Government. However, Danny isn't there now and I hope people truly do listen to reason and give this region an VOICE with Mr. Watton.

CB'ER, your right when you say that I am voting anything but Tory. The people of NFLD and LAB. deserve a stronger opposition.

What do we get if we elect another Tory? Just another yes mam in Dunderdales government. We need a stronger opposition. I voted for Williams not for the tory's. The tory's have lost it since Williams left. They couldn't even handle Brad Cabana without making a mess of it. Good luck Mark.

Watching all the people in Egypt and Tunisia rising up and demanding their rights, it gives me hope that some day a healthy democracy will take root in NL. Voting for a rotten and tired PC government only prolongs the arrival of that day. Pity, that.

Oh my. Enough with the Danny bashing already. This article is about Mr. Granter, not Danny. But while were on the topic lets see...hmmm new courthouse, new city hall, new hospital, ect ect....now lets think back to what we got under premiers Tobin and Wells...hmm can't think of a thing. There is a reason the liberals were ousted from the House of Assembly people. I don't know about you but I'd rather a despot who gets things done over a "democrat" that did absolutely nothing!

Congrats Mr. Granter on your nominination! Be sure to get there to your people. You are a notable gentleman with a good reputation and rapport with your staff and students. As for him being a double dipper. He is on leave for this by election and therefore is going without pay for this time of meeting the people in this riding. The Liberals did not leave their great marks up this riding or province whereas the former premier did. You have got to be joking about getting the liberals back in. Think of the first premier, he sold Newfoundland down the drain with the Churchhill Falls deal. The former premier did not and would not accept any garbage from any one ( oil, companies, federal government and even Quebec)and that is why we are back as a have province and we are getting the rights and recogition. Keep knocking on those doors Mr. Granter and make sure the people get to know you well. There are some conservatives out there!

Humber west was badly neglected prior to 2003. I think it's important to continue the progress over the past few years. We've gotten the most state of the art high school in the province, a long term care facility, an addictions centre, another access road to massey drive, money to Kruger, a courthouse, increased RNC funding for the area, and now a brand new hospital. Not to mention granting Grenfell increased autonomy, something many in the Liberal Party were against before 2003. I think this by-election should be about Humber West, not about rebuilding the Liberal Party. If Yvonne Jones needs more people with her in the house of assembly, let other areas of the province give them to her. Let's keep moving forward here. It must be hard enough to lobby for funds against all the MHAs from St. John's. What a set back it would for the area to lose another voice.

CB'ER...you mean to tell me that you don't have any questions for Granter? Sounds like your happy to cast a vote for who ever is running for the current government. Thank God we live in a democracy or would you rather a dictatorship?

Wow... slow day in the liberal camp. His booming voice will certainly be heard in the house, despite what some other posters have said. I agree, CB has some issues that were neglected previously, but unlike the vast majority of complainers and whiners who have provided their $0.02, I'll wait until I see how he does before casting opinion.

No issues, Mr. Granter. I can think of one. We have an unoccupied newer school sitting in the center of the city while our kids attend a recently closed building due to mould. Where do you sit on that issue? I think they are both in the riding you are challenging. By the way, anything the PCs did for Corner Brook was only what we deserved...new court house, new city hall, plans for new hospital were all badly needed. I would contest that for having the premier and a powerful cabinet minister in the city, we got vvery little. Have you visited St. John`s lately.

I don't believe anything that the PC's say anymore, their liars and all they do is make open ended statements to please voters. I bet that within 2-3 months after the general election of 2011, they support TDF in Corner Brook and we'll see the mill burning tires. I hope that people vote for the NDP or Liberals. Time to get rid of some of these last remnants of Danny's Sheep. Jee whiz, the poor old Kathy Dunderdale is only taking a hit for the team anyhow, she can't even form a complete educated sentence in the media and she has cost Canada $250 M in the last year in legal payouts... is this really the party that can keep us on the right path. Ask yourself, what benefits have you received in the past 9 years of tory rule? With all this talk of a 'have province that we are.. I haven't seen any direct impacts in my community.

We can't win. What do we have to choose from - a teacher, a Toronto lawyer and a student. All we need now is a Labrador Retriever to run for the Greens.

Mr. Granter was my principle in High School and I have never seen any administrator put so much effort into talking to every student in the school. He was always looking for input from students and I am sure he will do the same for Humber West. I know for a fact if it was not for him the new high school would not have had any of the amenities that it has now. All the course options, extracurricular activities and the facilities are all a result of his hard work. There is no better man to represent Humber West.

I was very pleased to see that you had won the PC seat in our district. By far I think you would of made a strong leader. How ever, in order to become a strong leader you must have a good campaign team. During your tv broadcast excepting your win I noticed our EXMAYOR CHARLES PENDER in the back ground. I also learned that he was in your campaign team. If you share the same views as EXMAYOR PENDER .......GOD HELP US IF YOU SUCCEED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Voters will get a member in the House no matter who wins the by-election. Are you more likely to get a VOICE, though, by electing another clapper for the Tory benches, or someone, unlike the PC's, who is allowed to ask questions and hold the government to account?

While it may be great to have a government sided representative with a strong voice for our district, I think its better for the province as a whole to have more opposition in the house. Its time to downsize the tory majority and get more voices in the house!
