Two men charged in home invasion remanded

STEPHENVILLE — Two men, alleged to have been involved in an armed home invasion in Stephenville on Jan. 18, were remanded into custody when they appeared in Stephenville Provincial Court on Monday.

Charles Joseph Barron, 23, of Stephenville Crossing, and Donald Matthew King, 30, of Mattis Point, both spent two weeks in St. John’s undergoing psychiatric assessments.

Barron has been remanded into custody until his next court date of Feb. 8 for plea, while King was also remanded until his Feb. 15 court date.

Tyler Bennett, 19, of Mattis Point, and Marie Diane Bennett, 28, of Stephenville Crossing, who are alleged to have also been involved in the incident, have been released from custody with a court date set for March 4 for pleas.

The Bay St. George RCMP received the report of a home invasion at a residence on St. Clare Avenue at 8:10 p.m. on Friday, Jan 18. The report indicated three suspects with their faces covered entered the home with knifes and a machete.

The occupant, a male resident of Stephenville, was assaulted and received some bruises and cuts during the incident. He was taken to Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital in Stephenville and was treated for the injuries.

Police allege the group stole cash, marijuana, and prescription pills from the residence before fleeing the area in the getaway vehicle. Officers later arrested all four at a traffic stop in the area.

Barron was charged with breaking and entering and committing an offence, being disguised with intent, failing to comply with a probation order and possessing a controlled drug or substance.

Marie Bennett, who is alleged to have driven the getaway vehicle, has been charged with robbery.

Tyler Bennett faces two charges of possessing a controlled a drug or substance, breaking and entering and committing an offence, possessing property obtained by crime, possessing a prohibited weapon, and being disguised with intent.

King was charged with breaking and entering and committing an offence, being disguised with intent, possessing a prohibited weapon, two counts of failing to comply with probation orders and failing to comply with conditions of an undertaking or recognizance.
