Rates going up four per cent

This chart from a Marine Atlantic press release compares the old and new rates.

Marine Atlantic has released its 2013-14 rates and schedule, including a four-per cent rate increase for travel, effective April 1.

There are no changes to the fuel surcharge or security fees.

“Marine Atlantic is working to become a modern and efficient corporation offering a high level of customer service,” said Don Barnes, vice-president of customer experience. “We continue to be impacted by rising costs of materials, supplies and labour. We have implemented efficiencies and are continuing to make further changes in the way we operate to minimize the increase in costs passed on to our customers.

Barnes said the new ferry schedule has been designed to match traffic demand with capacity throughout the year. "The summer schedule, which is the busiest period for us, provides customers with a range of sailing options,”  Barnes said.

The new rate structure will be updated for all travel, beginning April 1. Reservations are available up to and including March 31, 2014.

The ships that are now being used are to big for the crossing. They are nice to look at but not suited . What is necessary is smaller ships that can be used in the busy season only for tourist and generally people who are not regulars but just once a year travelers. Ships necessary for goods and services tractor trailers etc should be given priority but that priority should be with ships suited for them. Right now the ships that are in use would be good for longer sailing but not from North Sydney to nl. What should happen is an indepth study shouldf be done by people who understand the system not the people who have been doing the many studies over the years trying to create impressions for political gain and not efficient service for the people using the system

Seriously I think Newfoundlanders should be paid isolation pay. Bad weather we can't get anywhere. Fresh fruits and vegetables are not plentiful during bad weather. Delay in mail. What do we do? To expensive to fly and now getting too expensive to drive. Time for government to step up. It's fine for everyone to say its only 10 or 20 dollars but for goods and services crossing on those ferries, that means increases in fruits, vegetables, and everything else that crosses on the ferry!

The $5-$10 in crease is no big deal. When you consider the $550 round-trip for our family. My issue with the ferries is the food services available... they are terrible. There is very little choice, like 3 main fairs in the exclusive dining room or $6 hot dogs in the cafe. The argument that I have gotten when I wrote to Marine Atlantic is that they are striving their best to accommodate most passengers... I'd like to know who 'most passengers' are if that is the fare they enjoy. Yuck. I'd like my fries, dressing and gravy now, please.

Mindless time-of-day scheduling, poor customer service, poor 'on-time' record, unacceptably high weather-related service cancellations, unreliable onboard mechanical systems, and an already egregiuously high price for an essential service....yup, another 4% increase sounds about right.

As a person from the west coast of Newfoundland, and the cost and danger of driving after flying into Deer lake, adding a few dollars is not going to discourage me from using your service.......but can we please have back the "Fries, Dressing, and Gravy" on the menu. I don't want the hoity toity service of Roast Beef and other stuff cooked off of the boat. I just want my "Fries, Dressing, and Gravy"!!!

Et voila. We deserve exactly what we get here. We really do.
