Man released after alleged assault on officer

CORNER BROOK  Stephen Mitchelmore, 54, appeared in provincial court in Corner Brook Friday facing a number of charges that stemmed from an investigation involving provincial and federal fisheries officers on Wednesday.

Fish and wildlife officers and members from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans were involved in the investigation in the Roddickton area. As a result of their investigation, they requested assistance from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in St. Anthony and Roddickton.

RCMP arrested the man in the St. Anthony area on Thursday. He is charged with charged with assaulting a peace officer, obstruction, possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose and four counts of possession of a controlled drug under the Controlled Drug and Substance Act.

Further charges under the Fisheries Act are being pursued by the Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Division of the Provincial Department of Justice.

The man was released from custody on Friday on a number of conditions, and will reappear in court Aug. 6 in St. Anthony.
