CORNER BROOK  The driver of a tractor trailer that crashed early Thursday morning told police he had lost power as he was approaching Corner Brook on the Trans-Canada Highway.

The big rig — which was travelling eastbound with a heavy load of cold patch asphalt — ended up jack-knifing at the bottom of the inclined off-ramp at Exit 6, leading from the Trans-Canada Highway into Massey Drive and Corner Brook.

“He told us that he lost power and was making an attempt to pull off the highway to see what the problem was,” said Const. Scott Mosher, media relations officer with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary in Corner Brook.

“He saw the off-ramp and figured that was a good place to pull off.”

At some point, the 34-year-old driver from Sheaves Cove lost control of the rig. Mosher could not say if that was during the descent down the ramp itself or if the driver was just unable to negotiate the sharp turn at the bottom of the ramp. The truck ended up in the ditch on the other side of the road, after an unsuccessful attempt to make the left turn towards Corner Brook.

The driver was treated for minor injuries by paramedics at the scene. He was taken to Western Memorial Regional Hospital for further treatment and was later released.

The truck was extensively damaged and the accident did result in fuel from the truck’s fuel tanks being spilled. A crew from the Department of Environment and Conservation responded to clean up the spilled fuel.

The accident happened shortly after midnight. It was raining in the Corner Brook area at the time, but Mosher said there was no indication if the weather was a factor or not.

The exit from the highway was closed until around 4:30 a.m. and the truck was still lodged in the ditch for several more hours until it could be removed by a towing crew.

The investigation into the accident is ongoing.
