CORNER BROOK — A man detained after being charged with a series of Highway Traffic Act offences in Corner Brook Monday has been released from custody following an appearance in provincial court Tuesday.

Travis Watkins, 21, was charged with operating a motor vehicle without a driver’s licence or a valid insurance policy after he was stopped on Woodbine Avenue.

According to the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary’s overnight report issued earlier Tuesday, Watkins owed more than $7,000 in traffic fines.

One of the conditions of his release was that he not operate a motor vehicle or even occupy the driver’s seat of a motor vehicle.

I agree. We should arrest this guy and serve the INSURANCE INDUSTRY with a $7000 fine for ripping-off drivers in the way of ridiculously high premium rates. I mean, really, who should be handcuffed here?

this is ridiculous, something should be done. have $7000 owing and gets arrested again... there should seriously be something done about driving without insurance .. if someone hits me and doesnt have insurance and i then have to pay for the damages through my own insurance and have my own insurance go up, they better watch out !!

How is there not some way of enforcing these fines before they get racked up to that amount!?
