CORNER BROOK  Starting Tuesday, Western Health will be making the influenza vaccine available to generally healthy individuals aged two to 59 years old.

This expands on the previous target group of children under five years old and pregnant women.

A new vaccine has been acquired by the provincial government called FluMist, which is being used widely throughout North America and Europe.

FluMist is an effective vaccine that is delivered through a nasal spray instead of a needle. FluMist is licensed in Canada for people from two to 59 years of age, who do not have pre-existing health conditions.

Public health nurses have been fully trained to deliver this product. This is the first year FluMist has been offered in the province.

Individuals with existing health conditions should contact the provincial HealthLine at 1-888-709-2929 to confirm whether they qualify to receive FluMist.

As guided by the Provincial Influenza Program, the target groups will be further expanded when additional vaccines arrive over the next two weeks. Residents who do not fit the current criteria will be advised when the influenza vaccine will be made available to them.
