The Codroy Valley Waste management committee says it will be going after residents who aren’t paying their garbage collection fees.
In a letter dated Jan. 20, which was sent out with the annual bill, the committee said it felt people who do not pay are being unfair to those who pay their fees each year. The letter indicates that those who are not paying are still receiving garbage collection services.
The committee has over $15,000 in overdue payments.
“We have sent a number of written reminders and numerous telephone calls to residents in arrears,” said the letter. “While a number of these residents have attended to their account, the majority have made no response.”
Valley residents who pay early receive a discount of $20 and end up paying $3.08 per week for garbage collection. Those who miss the early-bird deadline pay $3.46 per week.
According to the letter, the committee has been in touch with the provincial government and it is considering several options, including possibly posting the names and amounts owed by homeowners with overdue accounts.
The letter also warns that if those in arrears do not pay up, the cost of weekly collection may go up for everyone else.
“This will happen as a direct result of residents who refuse to pay fees,” said the letter.
