An investigation that involved a number of police forces, including the Joint Forces Drug and Federal Enforcement Units in Corner Brook, resulted in the seizure of 103 pounds of marijuana, three kilograms of hashish and a vehicle on the east coast of the province Tuesday.

The Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit — Newfoundland and Labrador had been conducting an investigation into the transport of drugs from Nova Scotia to the Avalon Peninsula.

During the investigation it was determined that a 2010 Dodge Ram pickup was transporting a significant quantity of drugs across the province. The vehicle was intercepted on the Fox Trap Access Road and a warrant to search the vehicle was obtained.

The search resulted in the seizure of marijuana, which was contained in sealed plastic bags, and the hashish. The drugs were concealed in a wooden crate in the rear of the pickup.

The driver of the vehicle, Samuel Caines of 10 Garland Place, Conception Bay South, was arrested and has been charged with trafficking offences under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

Caines appeared in provincial court on Wednesday and was released on a surety with conditions pending his next court appearance on March 27.

Authorities in Nova Scotia, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Holyrood also played a role in the investigation.

The Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit — Newfoundland and Labrador is a provincial integrated enforcement unit comprised of police personnel from the RNC and the RCMP.  Its mandate is to detect, disrupt and dismantle organized crime through investigations and prosecution.
