A preliminary inquiry has been scheduled in the case of a young Corner Brook man charged with drunk driving causing bodily harm.

Mark Jeffery Thompson, 20, was charged with three counts related to impaired driving following the April 25 accident in which he and the female passenger were injured.

Information before the court claims Thompson was drunk behind the wheel of the 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier that crashed in the eastbound lane near Little Rapids just after midnight. According to RCMP, the four-door car rolled several times and had parts scattered across the westbound lane. The highway was closed at about 1 a.m., and was only opened to one lane of traffic by 9 a.m.

Police reported the female passenger from Massey Drive was seriously injured and had to be flown to St. John’s for surgery. The man was also taken to Western Memorial regional Hospital for injuries not deemed life-threatening.

In provincial court in Corner Brook Tuesday, defense lawyer Robbie Ash set the preliminary inquiry to be heard before a judge alone July 21, 23 and 24. The charges are straight indictable offences.

Thompson has faced many charges in the past couple of years in relation to numerous alleged offences. He pleaded not guilty to mischief charges in relation to damages at a local nightclub last October, while he received a suspended sentence for damaging property in Corner Brook with a pellet gun in the summer of 2011.

He was also charged in relation to the alleged spray painting of an RCMP officer’s vehicle in Pasadena. He was charged with conspiracy to commit a criminal offence, intimidation of a justice official, and mischief to property over $5,000. The co-accused in that matter are brothers Michael and Paul Flynn.
