UPDATED: Fire extinguished at Academy Canada office in Corner Brook

The cause of a fire that damaged the Academy Canada building in Corner Brook Thursday evening is still being investigated.

Deputy fire Chief Bill Griffin says that there were people cleaning inside of the building at the time. The fire happened during the evening and was prevented in the early stages due to the prompt detection from staff.

The Corner Brook Fire Department and the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary responded to the fire at around 7:40 p.m.

The fire was at the school’s office building on Park Drive and not at the main campus, where classes occur, located on University Drive.

Emergency responders were met with heavy smoke in the building upon arival. The fire at the rear of the building was contained quickly by the fire department.

The building received fire, smoke and water damage. No one was hurt in the incident and the cause of the fire remains under investigation as of Friday morning.
