Staff Sgt. Calvin Roberts, the newest staff sargeant at the Bay St. George RCMP detachment, said Police Week is all about community relations.

Roberts said that’s one of the reasons the Stephenville detachment hosted seniors for an open house as a kickoff to Police Week on Monday.

A native of Triton in Green Bay, Roberts started his career in 2000 in Corner Brook, then served in Nain, Labrador and New Brunswick before spending eight years in the Northwest Territories.

In June 2013 he returned to Nain before accepting the staff sergeant job in Stephenville in January this year.

Later this week, police will be holding a barbecue for youth in the detachment’s parking lot.

Police Week coincides this year with Road Safety Week, so Roberts said police will be doing various checkpoints on highways. Thursday they will be conducting a checkpoint in Stephenville.

The Bay St. George Detachment currently has 28 officers and four detachment assistants.
