Kayla Wall teaches a hula hoop class at C.C. Loughlin School Thursday, May 29.

No matter how hard she tried when she was younger, Kayla Wall could not hula hoop.

“I couldn’t do it,” said the Pasadena woman with still a hint of frustration in her voice.

But Wall wants people to know that it’s never too late to learn.

At the age of 21, with the help of a friend while living in St. John’s, she was able to master the hula hoop and has been hooping for about seven years now.

She said it’s like riding a bike.

“Once you know how to keep it up, it’s hard to drop it,” she said. “It’s fun. There’s endless, endless things that you can do with a hula hoop.

“It’s really good for keeping your fitness level up. It’s really good for cardio because it’s a no impact exercise, whereas running all the impact is on your knees.”

Walls laughs when saying she couldn’t run to save her life.

“But now the hula hoop, I can watch TV for about three hours and constantly hula hoop the whole time and not stop.”

Wall doesn’t consider herself an expert, but has taken in a lot of knowledge about it over the years and she’s started to share that knowledge with others.

On May 31 she taught a hula-hooping class at C.C. Loughlin Elementary, and will teach another on June 20 at Xavier in Deer Lake.

She had 27 students in the class at C.C. Loughlin and said she had no idea that people were so interested.

Wall said her students liked that it was not all just standing around with a hoop around their waist for an hour and that it incorporated a lot of arm exercises and transitions with the hoop.

She not only teaches hula hooping, but also makes hoops and recently started selling them. The hoops are all made out of utility pipe, which is thicker and heavier than the hoops found in stores.

Wall makes two kinds: a foldable infinity hoop and a water-weighted one.

She made all the hoops for the class and the students got to keep them as part of their registration fee.

More information on future classes, including some outside ones, will be available on Wall’s Facebook page, Hippy Hippy Hoops, or follow her on Twitter @hippyhippyhoops.
