July 1 is known as Memorial Day in Newfoundland and Labrador and is a day to remember the men and woman who lost their lives for our country. It also marks the anniversary of the fighting at Beaumont-Hamel during the First World War. Out of the 801 Newfoundlanders who went into battle that morning, only 68 were able to answer the roll call the next day.
