A small fire burned on Logger School Road west of Corner Brook on Monday, Aug. 4, 2014.

The cause of a small forest fire in the Logger School Road area Monday evening is unknown.

Const. Chris Pittman of the Corner Brook Royal Canadian Mounted Police said the cause is being investigated, but may never be determined.

The RCMP responded to a call from a couple fishing in the area just west of Corner Brook, who had spotted the blaze from a distance shortly after 9 p.m. Pittman responded to verify the complaint and make sure nobody was in any danger. He then notified the Department of Natural Resources and a provincial firefighting crew responded.

Bill Dennis and his wife Carrie of Corner Brook saw the fire while returning from fishing at Cook’s Pond. Carrie spotted smoke, and they drove two or three kilometres up the road where they could see the fire. They then returned toward the highway to call emergency services.

Dennis said the fire was in an area of recent cutting, about 16 kilometres in Logger School Road. He felt assured after speaking to a RCMP officer who informed him the provincial firefighting crew would be responding.

Pittman said the fire was contained to the cutover, which is approximately 100 metres by 50 metres in area. He said there were no people, vehicles or structures in the vicinity.

He monitored the situation for some time and said it was his understanding the fire was under control at approximately midnight. He did not have a further update Tuesday.

PIttman said the fire was contained as of Monday night.

Provincial forest fire duty officer Brian Oke said a four-person crew responded and set up pumps Monday night. They returned Tuesday morning to make sure the fire was contained. Only 0.3 hectares of land was burned.
