Good on ya, Emma Peckford

The province’s west coast has another musical ray of light. Emma Peckford deserves the praise and adoration she’s been getting through her showing at the Ottawa Bluesfest, where she took home the honour of being selected as the winner in the aptly named youth talent competition “She’s the One.”

Peckford has been gracious in the honour bestowed on her over the weekend and has shown a lot of maturity talking about her craft.

Of course, this is not the first time she’s been cast in the spotlight for her musical prowess. In November, the Corner Brook teen’s rendition of Iron and Wine’s song “Flightless Bird, American Mouth” helped earn her the Statoil NewFound Talent Contest title among a field of 16 fellow musicians. She’s also a sought-after talent locally, playing everything from festivals to telethons.

Not bad for someone who has yet to turn 16.

This win in Ottawa, though, must be the sweetest. In addition to the title itself, Peckford gets a trip to Los Angeles to work with a top L.A.-based music producer, to record a song at Sunset Sound Recording Studio, a star makeover, photo shoot and music tutorial before making a music video.

What must make the win even sweeter is the manner in which it was decided. Peckford was judged by experts on her talent and it was the people in the know that decided who was “the One.” This is not Aunt Sadie calling in to a phone number or little Biff hitting refresh on a website because someone on Facebook told him to vote a certain way. While those efforts are great as promotions — for both the act and the organizer — they unfortunately lack the merit of this contest.

What Peckford does next is left squarely in her hands. She has the potential to continue doing great musical things, but if she decides this is enough, that’s perfectly acceptable as well. The talent is evidently flowing and she’s building a strong local following to boot.

Hopefully her trip to LA is everything she wants it to be. No doubt, there will be a legion of supporters awaiting her next endeavour.
