DEER LAKE  It probably wasn’t quite the first impression the Elwood High Lakers were hoping for.

A 30-point effort from Patrick Brake was enough to push the Templeton Academy Tigers past the Lakers 59-56 in the opening game of the 37th edition of the Elwood Invitational Boys Basketball Tournament at the Deer Lake high school on Thursday.

Andrew Moss led the Lakers with 17 points and 22 rebounds, one of two double-doubles for the home side, as Jakob Schmeken had 13 points and 17 rebounds.

The host Lakers will get a shot at redemption 1:15 p.m. today against Price of Wales Collegiate (PWC) of St. John’s.

In the later game on Thursday, the Pasadena Academy Falcons thumped the Corner Brook Regional High Level 2 Titans 85-61.

Nick Pilgrim was the offensive force for the Falcons, netting 28 points, while Mitch Snow and Cory Manual both had 15.

Thomas Byrne led the way in the losing cause, draining 15 points for the Level 2 Titans, while Corey Hepditch managed 11 points.

Tournament action resumes 9:15 a.m. today with a match between PWC and Lewisporte High.
