Scoring goals in bunches usually spells success.
At least it did for Marble Zip Tuesday night at the Pepsi Centre.
Three goals in 78 seconds in the second period opened the flood gates for the Marble Zip squad in a 7-3 victory over MacAvery’s in the opening game of their best-of-three Corner Brook Men’s Ball Hockey League semifinal matchup at the Pepsi Centre.
Matt Roach finished the night with a hat trick for the winners, two of his goals coming 29 seconds apart during the offensive surge just over five minutes into the second period.
Colton Kennedy scored at 5:18 of the second period, the first goal of the three-goal barrage. Kennedy’s goal was a thing of beauty as he beat the defenceman to the outside, cut back into slot and deked Matt Hunt to put the puck into a yawning cage with the goalie having no change on the play.
Ryan Doody had a two-goal game for the winners, denting the mesh with the final two goals of the game sealing the deal in the opener. His two goals, his first with just 1:23 remaining, came 20 seconds apart as the opposition seemed content to run out the clock and get ready for Game2 Thursday night at the Pepsi Centre in a do-or-die situation.
Daniel Smith opened the scoring for the winners at 3:23 when his snapshot beat a partially screened Hunt with a one-timer to the short side low on the glove side.
Shane Hunt, Josh Skinner and Ian Skinner lit the lamp for the opposing bench, who battled back from a 4-1 deficit to get within a brace of goals before the winners found a second gear and popped ina couple of quick ones to ward off any thoughts of a comeback.
In other action, the Luxury Limos Curling Rangers shaded McHugh’s Riverdogz 3-0 to take a one-game lead in the other league semifinal showdown.
Both series resume Thursday night with the Rangers tangling with the McHugh’s Riverdogz at 8 p.m.
MacAvery’s tries to stave off elimination against Marble Zip in Game 2 slated for 9 p.m. at the Pepsi Centre.
