Western Wolves struggle at AAA peewee warm-up tourney

CORNER BROOK  Clearly, the Wolves have some work to do.

The Western Wolves posted a record of one win and three losses at the second of three warm-up tournaments — for the provincial AAA peewee hockey league — hosted by the Central IcePak in Bishop’s Falls over the weekend.

The AAA peewee program, featuring the top players 11-12 years of age, will see teams play three warm-up tournaments to help prepare for the provincial AAA peewee hockey championship Feb. 14-16 at the Goulds Arena. From here, the provincial champions will earn the right to represent Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador at the 2014 Bell Aliant Atlantic AAA Peewee Hockey Championship March 27-30 in Fredericton, N. B.

The first warm-up tournament was held in November in Bonavista with the Wolves posting a record of one win, one tie and two defeats at Cabot Stadium. The Wolves will host the third warm-up tournament Jan. 17-18 at the Gros Morne Arena in Rocky Harbour.

The following is a summary of the Wolves four games played over the weekend at the Pat O’Reilly Memorial Stadium in Bishops’s Falls over the weekend:

St. John’s 7, Western Wolves 1

Alex Newhook and Mark Rumsey had two goals apiece to lead the charge for the townies in the opener for the Wolves.

Riley Spurrell, Brett Budgell and Alex Hickman also lit the lamp for St. John’s.

Lucas Robinson of Rocky Harbour was the lone marksman for the Wolves.

Tri-Pen Ice 6, Western Wolves 3

Kyle Petten scored two goals to pave the way for the Ice.

Dawson Mercer, Shailynn Snow, Taran Leonard and Liam Best also scored for the winners.

Noah Legge scored a brace of goals for Western, while the other marker came compliments of Will Keating.

Tri-Com Cobras 4, Western Wolves 2

Ian MacIntosh, Brandon Knight, Cameron Flynn and Matthew Milley scored for the Cobras.

Matthew Burden had both goals for the Wolves.

Western Wolves 4, Central IcePak 1

Brady Genge, Lucas Robinson, Michael White and Noah Legge bulged the twine for the Wolves.

Brendon Mason scored for the IcePak.
