DEERâ€ˆLAKE Nick Drover scored late in the third period Monday night to lift the St.â€ˆJames Regional High Saints to a 6-5 win over the Elwood High Lakers.
Tristan Butt (2), Jamie Gillam (2) and Corey Skinner also struck for the Saints in the West Coast High School Hockey League victory at the Hodder Memorial Recreation Complex.
Jacob Bennett (2), Josh Oake, Justin Compton and Jared Bartlett responded in the losing effort.
Mitchell Warren earned the goaltending victory over Jordan Best.
Oake opened the scoring at 4:46 of the first period, from Lucas Reid, to put the Lakers up 1-0.
Gillam evened it at 13:37, with Nelson King assisting on the goal.
Compton gave the Lakers another lead at 14:50 of the first, an unassisted marker that sent the Lakers into the intermission with the advantage.
Theâ€ˆLakers grabbed a 3-1 edge at 3:04 of the middle stanza off the stick of Bennett. Bartlett and Brandonâ€ˆSmith drew the assists.
Skinner netted an unassisted marker at the 7:32-mark to pull his side back to within one goal.
Theâ€ˆSaints started the third period like a team possessed, as Butt knotted the game at 3-3 just 53 seconds into the final frame. Andrew Graham assisted.
Butt then gave the Saints a 4-3 lead at 2:10, from Drover.
Bennett made it 4-4 at 3:19, from Thomas Chaulk and David Hardy, but Gillam put the Saints back up by one at 4:51. Andrew Clarke drew the lone helper.
Bartlettâ€™s goal at 8:59 of the third, assisted by Smith and Reid, tied the game once again, but only wound up delaying the inevitable.
Drover struck at 13:35, from Butt, to seal the deal for the Saints.
According to results provided to The Western Star, the Corner Brook Regional High Titans lead the league at 7-3-0, trailed closely by the Gros Morne Academy Panthers at 6-3-0. Theâ€ˆLakers fall to 5-5-0, just ahead of the 4-5-0 Stephenville High Spartans. The Saints improved to 2-8-0.
