Spartans open Confederation Cup with tie

Nathan Philpott scored twice Thursday as the Stephenville High Spartans battled the Mobile Monarchs to a 3-3 draw in action from the 16th annual Confederation Cup high school hockey tournament in St. John’s.

Andrew Milley also scored for the Spartans.

Daniel Ryan (2) and Mitchell O’Driscoll replied for the Monarchs.

Milley put the Spartans up 1-0 at 12:29 of the first, from George Young and Dawson Drake.

O’Driscoll evened it at 6:54, with the assist going to Shane Kavanagh.

With 2:55 remaining in the opening frame, Philpott restored his squad’s lead. Logan McIsaac drew the assist.

Ryan made it a 2-2 game at 3:38 of the second perod, unassisted, before Philpott answered back with an unassisted goal of his own at 1:27 to put his side up 3-2.

Ryan’s second of the night, at 12:39 of the third, knotted the game for good. Kavanagh picked up the lone helper.

Francis Felix tended goal for the Spartans, while Colin Dunphy was in the crease for the Monarchs.

Elsewhere, the Corner Brook Regional High Titans dropped a 4-2 decision to the Clarenville Cougars.

Cass Warren (3) and Cody Penney did the damage for the Cougars.

Scott Delaney and Andrew Taylor picked up the goals for the Titans. Andrew Sacrey and Matt Colbourne assisted on Delaney’s goal, while Taylor’s was unassisted.

The Elwood High Lakers, meanwhile, defeated the Carbonear Sentinels 6-5.

A scoring summary from that game was not available at press time.
