Panthers defeat Lakers in playoff opener

Luke Parsons scored twice Tuesday night as the Gros Morne Academy Panthers earned a 6-4 win over the Elwood High Lakers in the opening game of the West Coast High School Hockey League playoffs.

Scott Samms, Jamie Reid, Nathan Ellsworth and Robert Gill also scored in the win at the Gros Morne Arena, which gives the Panthers a 1-0 edge in the best-of-three semifinal series.

Derian Gould (2), Josh Oake and Jared Bartlett did the damage for the Lakers.

Jonah Reid earned the goaltending win over Tristan Moss.

Game 2 is scheduled for Monday night at the Hodder Memorial Recreation Complex in Deer Lake.

The other semifinal series pits the Corner Brook Regional High Titans against the Stephenville High Spartans.
