CORNER BROOK A group of female hoopsters from G. C. Rowe have a better understanding of how tough the competition can be on the east coast of the province.
More importantly, this group has a better idea of what it takes to compete with the talented teams in the junior high ranks on the other end of the province.
The G. C. Rowe Grade 7 female basketball team finished with a 1-2 record at the Oâ€™Learyâ€™s Brook Grade 7 Girls Invitational Basketball Tournament in the capital city over the weekend.
The Rowe girls picked up its only win of the tournament â€” a 39-20 triumph over St. Paulâ€™s Intermediate of Gander â€” in a battle of the two divisional third-place teams.
Alex Williams and Julia Gardner were the top guns for the Rowe girls with eight points apiece, while Faith Rose supported the cause with six points.
The team finished round-robin play with an 0-2 record, opening the tournament with a 46-16 defeat at the hands of the host Oâ€™Learyâ€™s Brook squad.
Julia Gardner was the top scorer for the Rowe squad with four points, while six other players finished with at least two points.
The Corner Brook squad slipped to 0-2 after a close 30-27 loss to Mobile with Alyssa Warford leading the charge with eight points.
Alex Williams and Ashley Jacobs had six points apiece for the city girls in a losing cause.
