Western Building Products’ Taylor White, left, and Newfoundland Fasteners’ Chris Casey are seen during play Monday, the last night of the regular season, at the Pepsi Centre. Playoffs are scheduled to begin next Monday, Feb, 17.

CORNER BROOK  Just when it seemed the Corner Brook Molson Men’s Broomball League playoffs would be a one-horse race, veteran broomballer Eric (Sticky) Young reminded everyone of an age-old adage.

“On any given night, if you can get some good goaltending and a few breaks, any team can win,” said Young. “It’s that simple.”

Just moments before those comments, Young demonstrated as much out on the Pepsi Centre ice, hammering home a late game-winner to lift his West Side Monarchs over the league-leading Investors Group by a 2-1 score during the final night of regular season play.

Greg Park had the other Monarchs’ goal.

David Alexander scored for the investors.

A team with just one loss on its record heading into Monday night’s action, the investors opened the scoring at 10:15 of the first half, off the broom of Alexander. Martin Mantey recorded the assist.

Park tied it at 14:31 of the second half, from Young and Johnny Pelley.

Then, with 3:31 to go in the game, Young put his team in front. Ron Hancock was credited with an assist on the goal, which Young described as an “anticipation play.”

“I saw their guy going to pass the ball out to (investors player) Lance Ereaut and I just stepped in front of Lance and picked off the pass,” he said. “So I went in and fired a nice shot.”

Ian Jones was the winning netminder, while Leo Blanchard suffered the loss in place of regular investors stopper Adam Tilley.

In the other game Monday night, Western Building Products blanked Newfoundland Fasteners 2-0.

Paul Prosper and Gary Kean were the goalscorers for the winning team.

Marc Green registered the clean sheet.

The final standings see the investors on top at 11-2-2, followed by the builders at 9-5-1. The Monarchs moved to 5-8-2, with the bolt bunch behind them at 2-12-1.
