Just one year after the resurrection of the senior men’s soccer team from Stephenville, it appears a women’s squad will follow this season.
The Corner Brook Women’s Soccer League held its annual general meeting Monday night at Corner Brook Regional High School and the potential of a Stephenville-based club joining the fold was the biggest news of the evening. A representative for the team was present and league organizer Janine Gillis is optimistic the team will be in the mix.
“I think so,” she said. “They were pretty sure they had enough (players) there.”
The league has given the new squad a deadline of May 16 to confirm their participation. The plan right now is for the team to play an equal number of games as their Corner Brook counterparts, instead of drawing up a condensed schedule like the Stephenville men did in their return to the men’s league last summer.
The women’s setup will hold its usual open runs on May 21 and 25, with times yet to be determined, for anyone interested in giving the sport a try. The regular season would then begin on May 26.
