Gracia Gymnastics finally has a new home in Deer Lake

Craig Reid of the Gracia Gymnastics Club was all smiles as he talked about the lease agreement the club signed with the Town of Deer Lake on Monday night for a new space for the club.

The ink was probably still wet on the agreement, but Craig Reid was ready to get started on the work that needs to be done before the Gracia Gymnastics Club can move into its new home.

The club signed a lease agreement with the Town of Deer Lake on Monday night to rent space in the town’s new fire hall building on Reid’s Lane.

Reid, facility chair with the club, said the town and the club have been working on the agreement since last March, but it’s been a goal of the club for some time to get out of its current facility in the town’s depot building on Gatehouse Road.

Reid said the biggest challenge in the beginning was convincing the town of the need.

“No one realizes how many athletes we’ve got,” he said.

With over 170, he said, it’s the biggest recreation association in the town next to minor hockey.

Once that was seen, Reid said it made a difference and the club is thankful to have the town’s support.

The new facility will give the club members more space to train in and enable it to expand by adding to its numbers and programs.

“The biggest thing is providing a better facility,” he said and noted the club has been working on a floor plan and has gotten some quotes for some of the work that will need to be done to get the building ready.

The club will look to fundraising and government funding to raise the money it needs for that and hopes to be in the building by Christmas.

Mayor Dean Ball said it took a lot of discussion and debate to reach this point, but he was excited to see it finally signed off on.

From the town’s point of view, Ball said they first had to make sure that they could allocate the space at the rear of the fire hall for use as a gymnastics club.

He said the town had considered moving the public works depot to the space, but decided it was not a fit.

The fire department and club will utilize separate parking areas with separate entrances.

The lease agreement

Term — 5 years

Rent — $250 per month to be reviewed after 36 months

Size of the space — 10,000 square feet

Expected cost to renovate building — $250,000
