Gros Morne to lose UNESCO status? print this article
Proposed transmission lines could cost park prestigious title

UNESCO recently pulled World Heritage Site status from the Dresden Elbe Valley in Germany, highlighting the possibility of the same thing happening here if transmission lines are run through Gros Morne National Park.

The United Nations agency removed Dresden from the World Heritage List last week for building a four-lane bridge "in the heart of the cultural landscape," a UNESCO press release noted.

UNESCO said Dresden is only the second property ever to have been removed from the list.

Crown-owned Nalcor Energy unveiled plans earlier this year to run transmission lines for the proposed Lower Churchill project through Gros Morne.

The proposal would include a series of 40-plus-metre-high transmission towers through more than 60 kilometres of the park.

There is an alternative route around the park, but it is considered more expensive and more difficult from a technical standpoint.

The Gros Morne transmission plan generated opposition from environmental and tourism groups, along with Parks Canada, which must approve the project.

In February, Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador (HNL) chairman Bruce Sparkes first raised the spectre of a Gros Morne losing its spot on the United Nations list.

"It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it's been suggested that if you put this corridor down through it, it (may) lose the designation," he says.

"We believe Parks Canada is correct in opposing this."

He said at the time that HNL supports the Lower Churchill project, but not the Gros Morne transmission route.

HNL officials declined comment this week.

And Parks Canada, which oversees Gros Morne, did not return a message before deadline.

Provincial government tourism materials prominently tout Gros Morne's UNESCO status.

It was named to the World Heritage List in 1987.

The Department of Tourism steered inquiries to Natural Resources Minister Kathy Dunderdale.

Dunderdale wasn't available for an interview, and the department did not forward a statement, as planned, before deadline.

The environmental review process for Nalcor's Lower Churchill proposal is ongoing, and is expected to be completed in 2010.

Meanwhile, the German broadcaster Deutsche Welle reported that Dresden's UNESCO delisting sparked concerns that the loss could hurt tourism and downgrade the city's reputation as a cultural icon.

Dresden's citizens twice voted in favour of the bridge, Deutsche Welle reported, with the issue sparking bitter debate among citizens.

David from NL writes: Oh, but brilliant Danny is surely aware of the consequences of his stupid, mindless, outrageous idea...he's a Rhodes Scholar, and we are soooooo lucky that he sees fit to serve as our beloved premier.

There's no oil royalties in Gros Morne, it's controlled by the hated feds, and the votes are all in St. John's.....why would Danny NOT shove it onto the dung heap?

ME from corner brook, nl writes: Boooo Hoooo. Does the UNESCO status actually bring people here? Do tourists say that's not a UNESCO site so we won't go there ? I think not. Leave it to the people of NL to sit on their a** and complain about everything. What harm is a transmission line gonna do in a park that's hundreds of square kms in size? Nothing.

Random Newf from around from Newfoundland writes: Big Deal. It's a valley left from the Glaciers thousands of years ago filled with rain water, there is probably thousands of them across the island, it's just that this one is along side the highway and has a couple boats in it for tour rides. Think about it whats needed more Power from Churchill or UNESCO title, I agree with ME from corner brook, the UNESCO title don't attract tourists. And besides at the end of the day it's only a hole filled with water surrounded by rock cliffs, now if that's beauty man am I screwed up.

Random Newf from around from Newfoundland writes: Well I call it Reality Hands Off Gros Morne. If it is ignorant to voice my opinion then ignorant I' am, did anyone state you as ignorant for your comment? I simply pointed out Gros Morne is all hype, there are thousands of other valleys left behind from glaciers, I know for several here where I live, they have all what Western Brook Gorge has except the hype, simply because they are not as accessible. Now I'm not against what WBG has going all the power to them if they can suck dollars out of tourists but Big Deal as I so ignorantly stated before if they lose their UNESCO title. Such a title did not bring tourists to the Gorge, people spreading the word of their experiences and commercials attract them. Hands off Gros Morne did you even know about UNESCO before reading here, I highly doubted however I' am interested to hear you response. Sorry I went over my typing allowance, NEXT!!!

Random Newf from around from Newfoundland writes: Nope, brain is just fine there David ole buddy, thanks for your concern do, awful nice of you to ask. And yes I get out a lot unlike others according to some of the comments towards mine. Man oh man, Did you travel Gros Morne David? Did you go there because of UNESCO David? Have you been to other places on our Island David, such as Triton, St Anthony, Green Bay, White Bay I can keep going David with the many places on our Island I have been too that has beauty. You take the Blow Me Down Mountains for example, heard of them David? Well let me tell you, they supposedly according to experts were formed through erosion, now I could be wrong people don't hold this as gospel, but I do know that these Mountains are breath taking. I can take someone up on those mountains and be just feet away from Moose and Caribou, look over Gorges filled with beauty, go to the mountains edge and overlook the scenery the bay of Islands has to offer but it do not happen why? Because it is not over advertised like Western Brook Gorge is. I will give you another example of over advertisement, some hear Corner Brook and they think right away of the Man in the Mountain. On the coastline of the outer Bay of Islands there is a statue that formed in the rocks some hundreds of feet above the sea, the statue is an exact replica of the Virgin Mary, known to locals as Virgin Rock. It is amazing, you can even see the hands folded in prayer such as the statues we see in our churches, however it is not known of much because it is a boat ride involved to view it and it is out of the way, unlike the Man in the Mountain. Anyhow besides all that rubbish the story above involves some transmission lines interfering with the Park holding a title, well BIG DEAL, do any of you seriously think people are still not going to swarm there every year?? Come on get real. And yes David, all you have to do is get out of Gros Morne and you will see that it is nothing but HYPE.

M from Newfoundland writes: I think Gros Morne is absolutely beautiful, and I don't think it's all hype. If you appreciate the natural beauty of the earth, you will appreciate Gros Morne. I think they should try to preserve it as much as possible, since we are losing more and more of our beautiful landscape everyday to development and what not. Tourists flock to Gros Morne every year, and I haven't heard any of them complain yet that it was overrated.

A Newf away from Alberta writes: I have been to almost every province and have seen much of the beauty each has and am LOOKING forward to going to Gros Morne and bringing long lost relatives from the U.S.A. there to show them a breath taking part of our planet..
I have also seen many beautiful areas of the U.S. But Never have I come across anything more majestic - or magnificent then Gros Morne...
I do not care if it has status from some group from away-- leave it alone - AS IT IS-- the way it has been for many years -it draws tourists and brings money to the economy there and surrounding areas.
Why do do almighty dollar have to destroy everything beautiful and not rampage everything in it's wake.. Remember many other money making schemes did damage too and down the road could have been done a little different with not so great of an impact--let's not be too hasty.
Where there is a will there is a way -- maybe kinder to the impact on the enviroment there.

Random Newf from around from Newfoundland writes: Enlighten us David how either Geography or Geology got anything to do with my comments above or the story. I know it may be hard for you but stay focused. UNESCO or no UNESCO it do not matter, people do not come because of it. That is why I say BIG DEAL, people will still swarm there. Why I do not know, I've been to nicer spots in Newfoundland and didn't have to walk as far. Sorry but that is reality, read less if you can't accept that!!!

David from NL writes: Random Newf: Geography is the study of the various morphologies , or shapes, of the planet's landscape. You posted about several of the different erosional cliffs, valleys left behind by glaciers, and beautiful views you know of in Newfoundland...although you seem oblivious to it, these are referring to the geography of Newfoundland.

In one post you even state : now I could be wrong, people don't hold it as gospel....

Well, you are wrong. Totally ignorant of facts actaully. Face it....your opinion has been exposed as based in ignorance.

Education is a wonderfully enlightening and empowering pursuit. I recommend you try to get some before you spew factaully deprived opinions as truth.

Gros Morne rocks.

Maybe you David should really think before typing. Again there is nothing our bickering will do online, I think Gros Morne is Hype that is my opinion, I' am entitled to it, you think I' am Brain Dead for a while and need education now tell us David who is being Ignorant. Get off your arce and speak up. People do travel to Nfld. because of the UNESCO status. Someone once said the squeaky wheel gets all the grease, my husband once said some times the squeaky wheel gets replaced. People want to see unspoiled beauty, that is where the long lasting draw is, be it local, tourist or people like me island born and raised who roots go back to the early 1500's in my beloved Newfoundland and hope to travel it time and time again.

Person from CornerBrook from NL writes: in my opion putting in power lines is not going to hurt the park, and its not going to make the place and different or less beautyful. The people that want the place preserved as it was hundreds of years ago dont seem to have a problem with the road that runs through it or trash tourists leave behind. So BIG DEAL if the government wants to put a power line through all it could do is help the people of Nl as building the line will CREATE JOBS!!!!!

just me from newfoundland writes: If people are so concerned about the park get out of you car and pick up some trash, clean up your yards and do something to make your community look a little bitter. Some of us would like to work in this province. We are not the only province with power lines and will not be the last to have one built in our back yard. It seems every time this province as a possibility to increase the work here some people are right there to try and shut it down. Frightened you may get a job and have to do something. Stop worrying about people from out of this province and worry about the people here that want something.

west coast from deer lake, nl writes: Its difficult to believe that people feel its okay to run a power line that is higher than the Confederation Building down through Gros Morne, for those of you that has suggested that Gros Morne is not one of the most beautiful places in Canada, tell what is better, I have been fortunate enough tp go coast to coast in Canada and there are many beautiful places but, in my opinion, nothing better. There are other options, is not one or the other, there is another route outside the park, this is a project costing more than 6 Billion, the cost to run this outside the park is not a deal breaker, and yes the people of Deer Lake very much value the people on the Northern Pennisula who often use the services of our town including our airport along with the many visitors who are very much aware Gros Morne is a designated UNESCO site
