A Roman Catholic bishop who recently announced his resignation citing “much needed personal renewal” is facing child pornography charges.
According to CBC News, Raymond Lahey, the former bishop of the Diocese of Antigonish and St. John's native, was arrested at the Ottawa Airport last week after members of the Canada Border Services Agency performed a random check of his laptop computer.
Lahey is known for his role in overseeing a $15-million settlement with survivors of sexual abuse by priests in the diocese dating back to 1950.
According to the CBC report, Lahey has been charged with distributing and selling child pornography, though no court date has been set.
On Saturday, Lahey, 69, submitted his immediate resignation to the Vatican. He also sent a letter to parishioners saying the resignation had been accepted.
As bishop of the diocsese since 2003, Lahey oversaw all Catholic churches in Cape Breton.
