A 22-year-old Stephenville man charged with resisting arrest and assault on a police officer from an incident on Main Street in Stephenville early Saturday has been released from custody.

A prepared release from the Bay St. George RCMP said it was about 2:50 a.m. on Saturday that officers from Bay St. George RCMP observed an altercation between a man and a woman on Main Street. They intervened and arrested the man for public intoxication.

The man resisted arrest and attempted to flee the scene, was apprehended and was charged with resisting arrest and assault on a police officer.

He appeared in court via telephone and was released on a recognizance with a court appearance at a later date.
