It was supposed to be done by now, but the City of Corner Brook has not forgotten its plans to honour the Royal Newfoundland Regiment’s most decorated soldier.
Just over one year ago, Corner Brook’s city council announced that it would be building a hiking trail in memory of Maj. Bertram Butler, a First World War hero who lived out most of his life in Corner Brook.

The plan was to commence work on the trail last spring. The trailhead would be off West Street, near the Ultramar gas station, and the trail would wind its way up the hill to join the existing Three Bear Mountain trail.
The work has been delayed because of the development of the building that formerly housed The Bargain Shop and which is now being turned into a boutique hotel and microbrewery by Major’s Logging Ltd.
Darren Charters, the City of Corner Brook’s director of community, engineering, development and planning, said the project was put on hold to ensure that it would fit in with whatever Major’s Logging had planned for its development.
Charters said the city has requested an update on the building site development and design work for the trail is being worked on.
He expects the trail work to now be started this coming spring.
The work being done by Major’s Logging had seemingly been on hold recently, with not much activity at the site. The Western Star requested an update from the company but had not gotten any response as of deadline Thursday.
