CORNER BROOK It was faith that led him into the career he currently enjoys, but fortune that enabled him to share his cooking secrets with his fans in Newfoundland.
Chef Massimo Capra of Italy made a stop into Colemans at the Gardens in Corner Brook Thursday afternoon to purchase the produce on his list of ingredients. Capra’s shopping was for the meal he’ll be preparing on the set of his show, “Gourmet Escapes.”
The show will be filmed Sunday evening in the Cox’s Cove area and aired on Discovery Channel in the Spring of 2014.
The world-famous chef said the scope of the show is to showcase the bounty of every area in Canada. Capra said there is no excuse to assume there is bad food in your own area because it is only a matter of adjusting to that food.
Newfoundland’s northern soils tend not to be as rich as other farming provinces, but Capra suggested that the sea contains a bounty that can be showcased in his show.
“It is nice to come and showcase the traditions and the local culture as well as the food culture,” said the celebrity chef, who owns Toronto’s Mistura restaurant.
Capra said the other chef who he works with on the show provides him with a list and sends him off to fetch the product for the on-set meal demonstrations, which is the reason he made his appearance at Colemans on Thursday.
“Some of the fish will be fished ourselves and I am excited to do that,” he said of the cod fish on his list.
The list of products can sometimes be difficult to fetch in unfamiliar territories such as Newfoundland, but Capra said he speaks with locals while he shops to assist him in collecting the products more efficiently.
He said his current list consists of cod, cod tongues, clams, mussels, berries and some liquor to create the masterpiece he will be preparing on set during the filming of the show on Sunday.
“I am expecting a great meal on the beach and the fish to be so wonderfully fresh,” said Capra.
