DEER LAKE — A winner has been selected in the Deer Lake Winterfest’s annual slogan competition.

And, nine-year-old Keegan Butt’s entry of “Snowflakes are falling, good times are near, it’s Winterfest, so give a great cheer,” made the cut.

The Elwood Elementary Grade 4 student said it was a slogan that he had originally left at home.

“I asked my teacher if I could bring it in the next day and she said yes, so I could enter it,” he said. “I can’t wait for Winterfest, it was fun last year.”

Keegan picked up a small cash prize and an admission bracelet for all Winterfest activities. As a bonus, his entire classroom also received admission bracelets, meaning that for all of them, the Tim Hortons Deer Lake Winterfest will be free of charge this year.

Keegan said he’s looking forward to the sliding hills on Bowater Field the most, as well as games and entertainment.

Committee members Crystal Major and Patty Regular were on hand at the school Thursday afternoon to present the prizes. Major said there will be a mix of traditional events as well as new.

“The Amazing Race (Winterfest event) is going forward this year and we have looked at events that didn’t work so well last year and we have brought in some new ones,” she said.

Major added that they are keeping events that are most successful and have done their best to bring in new things that people will like. Performers include Sherman Downey and hypnotist Gary Summers.

The Winterfest schedule will be sent out next week, but it is already viewable at Deer Lake’s Facebook page and will soon be on the town’s website.
