A 20-year-old Stephenville man has been arrested and charged with production and possession of a controlled substance.

The charge came about from an investigation by RCMP members into a fire at an apartment on Alabama Drive in Stephenville on Wednesday afternoon.

Cp. Richard Basha said a call about the fire was received at 1:38 p.m. with police and fire emergency attending. The fire was contained to the bedroom area of the apartment and put out; however police discovered a marihuana plant growing in the room and made the arrest.

Basha said it is believed that the fire could have been started by a faulty power bar in the residence.

The man was later released from custody and will attend court at a later date.
