In 2004, Elizabeth Poole of St. Lewis, Labrador died from complications from diabetes. Her husband, Guy decided he wanted to do something in her memory, and to help raise money for the Canadian Diabetes Association. He thought then, that this would be a one-time event. But he decided after the first year to make it a “Liz’s Walk” for Diabetes.
Each year since then, Poole has walked between 200 and 300 kilometres of the province’s roads.
Last year, he started walking the the island portion of the province’s main roads - and walked from St. Anthony to Cow Head.
This year the 70-year-old will walk from Cow Head to Port aux Basques from Sept. 6-18.
This year ‘Liz’s walk will start at the town hall in Cow Head and Poole expects the walk to Port aux Basques to take 13 days. He plans to walk 30-km daily.
To date, Poole has raised over $43,000 for the Canadian Diabetes Association and two years ago received a “Volunteer of the Year Award” from the Canadian Diabetes Association for his yearly effort.
