A man from the Bay of Islands has had his pickup truck seized and is facing a criminal charge after police clocked him driving at 176 km/h on the Trans-Canada Highway Wednesday.

In a press release issued early Wednesday evening, RCMP Traffic Services West said the 26-year-old from Halfway Point was arrested upon being pulled over and has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

He was stopped on the highway near St. Jude’s, a community about one kilometre west of Deer Lake. The posted speed limit in that area is 100 km/h.

The man was released from police custody and is due to make his first appearance in provincial court in Corner Brook Oct. 28.

In reminding motorists to drive safely, the police urged anyone witnessing someone operating a vehicle in a dangerous manner, or if they suspect an impaired driver, to contact their local police detachment or call 911.
